The Only Requirement – Celebrating Unsung Heroes in AA History

Alcoholics Anonymous was founded on a radical and enduring idea, clearly stated in Tradition Three: “The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking.” From its earliest days, this principle created a fellowship meant to be open to anyone seeking sobriety—regardless of background, circumstance, or identity.

This weekend retreat explores that promise of inclusion through the stories of early, and often overlooked, pioneers in AA history—including female and LGBTQ+ members whose contributions helped shape the fellowship as we know it today, even when their names and experiences were not widely acknowledged.

Led by historian and longtime AA member Mily T., the retreat features a series of in-depth presentations on influential figures such as Marty Mann and other key early contributors, alongside newer research highlighting LGBTQ voices whose impact on AA has been largely unrecorded. These talks—each approximately one to one-and-a-quarter hours—will offer historical context, personal stories, and insight into how these individuals navigated stigma, service, and recovery in their time.

Throughout the weekend, Elizabeth S. will facilitate small breakout group discussions following the presentations. These sessions are designed to help participants reflect on the themes raised—such as stigma, visibility, service, and courage—and explore how those same forces continue to show up in our own lives and recovery today. The focus is on thoughtful conversation, shared experience, and practical application, rather than debate or theory.

The retreat opens Friday evening with a personal introduction from Mily, sharing how she came to care deeply about AA history and the voices that have quietly shaped it. Saturday and Sunday will include time for rest, informal connection, and exploration of The Wilson House, the surrounding grounds and cemetery, and nearby Manchester.

This weekend will appeal to those who love AA history, value thoughtful discussion, and are curious about how the past continues to inform the present. At its heart, it is a reminder that the strength of Alcoholics Anonymous has always come from the willingness of individuals—seen and unseen—to show up, carry the message, and make room for others.

PLEASE NOTE: We are a small inn with only 13 guest rooms available. Many people attending this program will need to stay nearby. There are nice family-owned motels and airbnbs in the area.
